During practice, Spencer Haywood is noisy, leading to a private conversation with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Haywood admits to being a cocaine addict but promises to be clean before the game. Therefore, Abdul-Jabbar refuses to report his colleagues.

Winning Time Season 1 Episode 9, Buss faces a huge loss as his mother dies, but the Lakers book a place in the NBA Finals. Therefore, the episode highlights the challenges that everyone involved in the Lakers faces in order to reach the finals. Another challenging sacrifice comes at the end of the episode as pool players have to decide whether to let Spencer Haywood finish the season or fire him. After securing their place in the finals, the Lakers team relaxed at The Forum Club. However, they were warned of Haywood’s deteriorating condition as a result of his addiction.
Abdul-Jabbar reports the incident to party officials. Westhead and Riley called the entire team to discuss the situation. Although Riley says Haywood will be a key team player in the final, Westhead allows players to resolve the issue. He believes that since the decision will directly affect the team, the players must decide whether to fire Haywood or not. After asking for a few ideas, Abdul-Jabbar chooses to hold the vote.
After the decision is made, Abdul-Jabbar talks to Haywood in the changing room. Haywood feels betrayed and believes that “white” people decide his fate. However, Abdul-Jabbar informs him that the players voted for Haywood’s fate, and the coaches did not participate. Abdul-Jabbar then revealed that he had cast a final vote, which led to the decision to dismiss Haywood.
Angry Haywood walks out of the locker room while Abdul-Jabbar thinks about the decision. Tough times highlight the hardships of losing a loved one. The episode closes with Abdul-Jabbar teaching Magic Johnson his skyhook brand token while Haywood orders a song from his Lakers teammates.
