Who is Hemu Basu?
With a keen eye for color, a love of color, and a unique style, Hemu Basu began baking at an early age as a hobby. However, when she prepared a fire truck cake for her son’s birthday at his request in 2012, everyone close to him recognized Hemu’s raw talent and urged him to improve her craft as much as possible. That is how the self-taught Indian baker in India not only rediscovered her love but also managed to turn it into a successful, full-fledged small business venture.

From then on, Hemu grew to be a specialist in real-world cakes and climbed the ladder of the industry by winning a few tournaments/awards, which led him to end up on Netflix’s radar. Despite her ambitions, however, her goal was ‘Is It A Cake?’
it was not to gain fame or fortune but to show his skills to her children and to dedicate his work to his older sister, who died tragically in Covid-19 in early 2021. Unfortunately, although Hemu showed off his prowess, the judges carefully guessed at his photo cake to finish him off at the end, meaning he only took $ 10,000 in hand.
Where is Hemu Basu Now?
Hemu Basu still lives in Katy, Texas, where she continues to work as the owner of Hemu’s Sweet Sensation on 4519 Red Yucca Drive and makes custom-made cakes that break all the bounds of creativity. It should be noted that apart from the real Netflix, she has been a contestant in Food Network’s ‘Wedding Cake Championship’ season 2 back in 2019 and ‘Halloween Wars’ season 10 in 2020 (where her team really won). As far as we can tell, Hemu is a family woman who is totally committed to expanding her business right now – she has no intention of allowing anything or anyone to interfere.
To Hemu Basu, baking is more than just art; it is her way of empowering others, it is the way she heals, and her sense of belonging. “Making edible sculptures gives me the same peace and happiness that you have when you visit any spiritual place or temple,” she explained once. “Baking makes me happy and the fun makes everyone happy.”

The cake designer, who started competing in 2016, has some great advice for uneducated people, “Don’t be afraid to try something new, failure is an option and a learning experience! You have to learn from failure. What can you do differently in the same situation?
Is there a way to recover right now? Icing does wonders with broken cakes. What is your sweetness in this situation? I look at my whole life like that… Follow the instructions but deviate when you need to. I have a structure, but I bend down when I need to. ”
