‘Smother’ is mostly recorded in an area in Ireland, especially in County Clare, where the story begins. Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean that combines a few low-lying mountains with numerous rivers. Due to the varied climate, which does not suffer from any high temperatures, the island is rich in a tropical land and lush vegetation. These features make Ireland a popular recording destination among many filmmakers.
The main photography of the first season began in February 2020 but was stopped a month or more due to the Covid-19 epidemic. After a few months of recess, the recording was back to normal in September 2020 and was completed by November of that year. With regard to the main photography of the second round, started in April 2021 and ended in June 2021. In addition, the recording of the third season of ‘Smother’ began in February 2022.
Ireland
The ‘Smother’ co-ordinator team travels to several towns and villages in County Clare to shoot different sequences against the right background. For the most part, actors and staff set up tents in the small town of Lahinch, located in Liscanor Bay. The 5-star hotel called Moy House in Calluragh South in the village has doubled as the home of the Ahern family. However, the hotel has closed its doors permanently for accommodations.
Several other towns in County Clare serve as the backdrop for a few episodes in the series. Ennistymon, the capital city of the country, and Lisdoonvarna, a spa town famous for its music and festivals, also appear in ‘Smother.’ Clearly, a few important sequences are also recorded at the Ennistymon Community Center on Parliament Street in Ennistymon City. Moreover, it seems that The Burren, a region-based karst / glaciokarst, is used as the backdrop for a few scenes as well.
Apart from the villages mentioned above, a few towns in County Clare also serve as production centers for the Irish series. For recording purposes, the cast and crew traveled to Liscanor, a coastal region in the region. In addition, some important scenes are also recorded in the villages of Fanore and Spanish Point, a village in the province of Milltown Malbay.
Thanks to County Clare’s beautiful and flexible landscape, the region has attracted a large number of filmmakers by producing all kinds of recording projects. You may have seen this great region after several movies and TV shows, such as ‘Harry Potter, ‘Into the Badlands,’ and the Half-Blood Prince,’ ‘Calm Horses,’ and ‘Finding You.’
