Where is Nichelle Nichols Now?
Nichelle Nichols was born in December 1932 in Robbins, Illinois. While her father worked in a factory and was an elected official, her mother was a housewife caring for six children. After performing as a singer and dancer in various bands in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1940s and 1950s, Nichelle Nichols received the title of Nyota Uhura in ‘Star Trek: The Original Series.’

After the first series, Nichelle Nichols wanted to leave ‘Star Trek‘ to pursue a career on Broadway; at the time, she felt that her role in the show was dwindling. But a chance encounter with Drs. Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. It was the only program he let his children watch, and he said she was an example to many. Nichelle’s role was particularly tragic at the time, for a black woman in the 1960s who played a significant role in a popular drama was rare.
After the play ended its performance in 1969, Nichelle continued to play her role in six ‘Star Trek films and a thriller series. In the years that followed, Nichelle played a number of roles in other TV shows and movies and borrowed voice from cartoons. She had previously worked as a Human Rights activist and, in 1977, NASA hired him to assist astronomers and other staff. Nichelle appeared on TV commercials and spoke publicly, urging women and people of color to apply.
In January 2013, Nichelle Nichols was taken to a hospital where she fainted. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis and, in 2015, had a mild stroke. At that time, Gilbert Bell, Niclele’s former manager, had already signed a medical certificate and legal documents that made her the main agent. In 2018, the situation went to court when Nicole’s son, Kyle Johnson, filed an application for conservation.

In 2018, documents show that Nichelle Nichols was diagnosed with dementia and had problems with her short-term memory and “sense of time, place, and immediate recall.” Kyle suspected that his mother’s mental illness had put him at risk of abuse. Kyle and the family believe that Gilbert had abused Niclele financially, embezzled money, and taken items from her home.
Gilbert – who denied the allegations – and his lawyer described Kyle as a “selfish abuser” who only wanted his mother’s money. In 2019, Kyle was appointed as Nicole’s guardian, but that turned out to be a turning point for Michelle’s friend Angelique Fawcette. According to him, the actor did not need storage because she was able to manage things with the help of an assistant. She also believed that Kyle did not do things that benefited Nichelle Nichols.
Meanwhile, Kyle is Nichelle’s caretaker and recently sold her home in Woodland Hills, California. He said the money would be used to pay for Nicole’s care. She reportedly moved to New Mexico and now lives with Kyle as her primary caregiver. Currently nearly 89 years old, Nichelle appeared in public in December 2021 as part of a farewell trip to Los Angeles, California.

But there are still questions about his health and well-being. Her sister, Marian Nichols Smothers, recently said, “I feel I have lost my sister in so many ways. She is not the person she used to be, powerful, in charge, who takes care of everything. “
