WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature that allows group administrators to delete messages of any user in the group, as seen by the feature tracker. The most widely used messaging service in the world is said to create a balancing feature that is supported by a competitor messaging service, which likewise allows administrators to delete messages by team members. WhatsApp is yet to announce the details of this feature, which is expected to come with upcoming beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS.
WhatsApp Moderation Feature: Group Admins Delete Messages for All Users
According to a shared screenshot of WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the Meta managed messaging service works with the feature to allow team managers to delete messages from any member of the team.
The screenshot shows a deleted message in a WhatsApp conversation, with the message “This has been removed by the administrator, WABetaInfo” to notify group members that the message has been deleted. Competitive Telegram WhatsApp also allows group administrators to delete messages from any user – but does not display a proxy message.
The future power of deleting all messages can serve as a powerful tool for balancing WhatsApp groups, especially to prevent the occurrence of false news or harmful content in the messaging service. The Bombay Supreme Court and the Madras Supreme Court previously ruled that the WhatsApp group management was not responsible for the questionable content posted to the group.
Last year, the Bombay Supreme Court noted that the group’s directors had limited power to add or remove members of the group and had no control over the content of the group.
Currently, there is no word on whether group managers will be able to delete old messages from the group. Users can currently delete their messages in chats or groups within 4,096 seconds – one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds.
However, WhatsApp may increase the message deletion limits in the management team, allowing them to deal with older messages sent by users in the group. As mentioned earlier, WhatsApp will still officially unveil plans to add such a feature to the messaging app.
