The Valet is a 2022 romantic comedy movie directed by Richard Wong and written by Bob Fisher and Rob Greenberg. “The Valet” is basically “Notting Hill,” but friendly, and surprisingly able to create its own kind of magic. To be honest, we filmed the movie without any expectations. I mean, that’s what we’ve learned from remakes and rom-coms in the past.
But “The Valet” proves it wrong and shows that, given enough thought and opportunity, even the most extreme news stories have the power to entertain and make us feel something, which is the purpose of cinema, to begin with.
The Valet: Synopsis
Antonio Flores is a humble valet living with his mother Cecilia. He is separated from his wife, Isabel, and shares the responsibility of caring for their teenage son. At the time, actress Olivia Allan was dating a city engineer and married to millionaire Vincent Royce. One night, when Olivia got into her Uber with Vincent standing next to her, Antonio hit his bike in the car.
The three were photographed together, sparking rumors that Olivia and Vincent were in love. Fearing that he will lose his company if his wife Kathryn divorces him, Vincent comes up with a plan to have Olivia and Antonio pretend to be a couple. Olivia accepts the proposal because she wants to avoid any negative publicity before the launch of her new film, Earhart, in which she plays the role of Amelia Earhart. Antonio asks Vincent for $ 12,850 to pay off Isabel’s debts in the hope that she will win her over.
Antonio and Olivia go out for lunch surrounded by the paparazzi. Olivia insults Antonio during the day and sees his vivid personality in public. Everyone, except Kathryn and Vincent, agrees to the plan and begins to believe that Antonio and Olivia are a real couple. Kathryn hires an independent detective to hold her own as they attend the first Hollywood show of Earhart. Kathryn asks Antonio, who is independent when she criticizes his work.
As he leaves the event, Antonio realizes that he has become popular, especially in Latin America. Antonio and his friends drive drunken Olivia home to avoid any unpleasant paparazzi photos.
The next day, Olivia is served a hearty breakfast by Antonio’s family. She recognizes their love for each other and their positive energy. Vincent is wrongly led that Antonio and Olivia are sleeping together, making him jealous. Earhart gets good reviews after the first show but Olivia is still depressed and confused about Vincent, as she is not sure if he will leave his wife for her, as he promised to do after his mother’s recent death.
Olivia goes to play Antonio’s son at school. Antonio and Olivia spend the night in a Latin neighborhood where nobody knows her. Antonio tells Isabel the truth when she pulls her aside and kisses her, asking if she will take him back.
At home, they pretended to have sex when they saw private investigators looking at them across the street. Olivia admits she was not living a healthy life. The next day, Isabel tells Antonio that she does not want to be with him and that she wants to file for divorce and move on. An angry Vincent shoots at Antonio’s place and punches him before Vincent’s lawyer can get him back in the car and drive him around.
Shortly after this, Vincent’s lawyer pays Antonio $ 25,000 and explains that he grew up far away from Antonio’s neighbor and is happy that he can do the right thing by paying Antonio a higher price and assures him that Vince will never notice. Cecilia suffers from a stroke and dies in the kitchen with Mr. Kim next to him. Antonio gives a beautiful and heartfelt eulogy in English so that his late mother’s boyfriend can understand, as he does not speak Spanish. He talks about his mother’s struggles to give him and his siblings a better life in the USA.
Kathryn learns the truth about Vincent and divorces him. After Vincent is arrested for fraud, Kathryn takes over the company and cancels a plan to verify Antonio’s estate when she asks Antonio if there is anything she can do to pay her by helping her submit divorce papers.
Antonio and his friend Natalie, the owner of a bicycle repair shop and the leader of anti-development circles, Antonio, who had been romantically involved with him since the beginning of the film, finally fell in love. The film closes with Antonio and Olivia reaffirming their renewed friendship as they discuss Antonio’s romantic life while the paparazzi take pictures on the street.
The Valet Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
As Stegman enjoys their relationship through the window, Antonio’s mother collapses as she suffers from a stroke. She passes away because of that. At her funeral, Antonio thanked Mr. Kim for all the happiness he has given him in the past and tells him that he will be her family. The next part shows Antonio’s friends urging him to meet Olivia.
He took their advice and went to their set, and told her she was sorry to hear about his mother. He also apologized for what he had said to her. She tells him that his words hurt because they were true, and she wants to break up with Vincent but may need his help. From the looks of it, both of them have rekindled their friendship.
In the next scene, we see Kathryn pass by Antonio’s phone and see many calls to “Councilman Gary.” Curious and dialing a number, Olivia just picks it up. Vincent waited for Olivia in their usual place, but to his surprise, it was Antonio, who handed him the divorce papers and called his wife.
Kathryn informs him that she is divorcing him and ties him up for another cheating. He tells her that he loves her and that Olivia is a naughty actress who throws herself at him, but unknown to him, she was in a car with Kathryn and tells her to go to hell.
Olivia apologizes to Kathryn for her association with Vincent when Kathryn tells her that when she met Vincent, he was married to his first wife, so she knew she wasn’t worth it. She also thanks Antonio and asks him if she can do something for him, asking him to stop raising children in his area. ‘The Valet’ concludes that Antonio has developed a long-term relationship with Natalie and lunch with Olivia, who is now one of his best friends.
Antonio is asked if he would agree to take part in the race, and he agrees, for a total of $ 12,850. He obviously sees this as a way to get his wife back. Later that day, Olivia arrives at her office, kisses her in front of everyone, and takes her to lunch with all the paparazzi watching. They chat for a while at the restaurant, and she informs him that he will accompany her to the start of the film show and that she will arrange a tuxedo for him, although he insists that he can rent it to his friend Chucho.
A few days later, he gets dressed for the first show and waits for Olivia to drive her limousine. He is advised by her spokeswoman not to talk too much and just say he is there to support Olivia on her big night. In the first game, he is unwell but well behaved. However, things seemed to be changing when Olivia and Antonio were contacted by Kathryn and Vincent, who interviewed them and asked how they met. Olivia is lying, and the conversation ends well, though she is still very much shaken.
She is in the bathroom when Vincent comes looking for him and tries to talk to him but tells him that he has lied to her, Kathryn seems to be a good person. He replied that she was good at parties but that he was a bad person at home. Olivia doesn’t answer but leaves the room. At the party, Antonio approaches Kathryn, who offered him $ 100,000 to tell him the truth about their relationship, as she does not believe Olivia and Antonio are in love.
Antonio tells her that she has underestimated the potential of the Latin man, and they are actually in love. As he walks out of the room, he finds Olivia very drunk on the stairs. Not knowing what to do, he took him to his home.
In all of this, she is followed by a detective, Stegman, who is employed by Kathryn. And Stegman was led by Kapoor, a detective hired by Vincent to see what he could find. Stegman and Kapoor used to work together and still get along. Kapoor interrupts Stegman’s car to check his findings. Stegman realizes that Antonio and Olivia have spent the night at his place and are convinced that their relationship is real. He told Kathryn the same.
