The Time Traveler’s Wife Season 1 Episode 2: Recap
The Time Traveler’s Wife Season 1 Episode 2 opens with Clare and Henry on the train and apparently during a fight. At this point, she is 20, and he is 28, and they are both in their second love. After their first date, which concludes with an argument, things get tense between Henry and Clare. They seem frustrated by the inevitability of their relationship, and Clare tries to change the plans for the better off the train. When it turns out she accidentally got off the bus at the right stop, Henry starts to explain how impossible it is to change some things.
Realizing that she may know him better, Clare reveals Henry’s past. He reveals that his mother was a famous musician, and we see his repeated journeys back when his mother died. The incident happened when he was eight years old, and his mother was beheaded. Sadly, Henry’s various versions keep going back to the time of the accident so that, at some point, there are more than a dozen versions (of different ages) of watching his mother die.
Clare is shocked by Henry’s revelation and wonders if he ever tried to prevent his mother from dying. Another memorandum explains that, just as the meeting of his parents was inevitable (Henry saw it again), his mother’s death was also set in stone. Then we saw eight-year-old Henry return a few months after his mother had died and he tried to tell her about the accident, but she could not believe it. At this point, Henry’s older versions also begin to train 8-year-olds like theft and invisibility to help them survive the next visit.
The Time Traveler’s Wife Season 1 Episode 2 Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
Back “for now,” as Henry (28) and Clare (20) continue their day, he takes her to the library where he works. There, he reveals a secret collection of his mother’s recordings and begins playing for Clare.
At the end of one of his mother’s games, Henry stops the tape and tells Clare to ask a question she would like to ask his mother. She asks herself aloud the question of what keeps a couple together. Henry starts playing the tape again, and to his surprise, his mother’s voice on the recording greets Clare and answers her question.
The climax of episode 2 reinforces the realities of the passage of time, especially for someone like Clare, who gets to hear about Henry. The recording of his mother playing for Clare came to light before she was born. However, her mother calls Clare by name and answers a question Clare thought right there, decades later.
Henry explains how his future, at some point, knows the question Clare will ask, and how it returns to one of his mother’s concerts. Although she does not recognize Henry’s older version as her son, there is something about him that attracts Henry’s mother, and she agrees to give him his wish. At the end of her next play, Henry’s mother calls Clare, says she is listening and answers her question poetically.
Interestingly, Henry points out that he too has never heard of his mother’s recording so doesn’t know what to say to her. Therefore, it seems that his future translation tells Henry about the recording and its significance. Thus, Clare’s questions and recordings that have not been heard from decades ago serve as an introduction to Henry’s mother and his future wife.
