The Perfect Mother Season 1 Ending, Explained: What Happened At The End?
‘The Perfect Mother’ begins with the murder of Damien and Anya as the only suspect in the case. Throughout the investigation, she insisted that someone else was present. She says it was Damien’s drug dealer who entered the house and killed Damien. At first, the audience found it easy to rely on Anya’s version of events. However, as her mother continues to dig into the case, Anya’s stories change dramatically. Each time new evidence emerges, Anya brings a new version of what happened on the night of Damien’s assassination.
Finally, the truth was revealed when Anya’s friend Sophie was completely clean. After Kamal’s death, she goes to Vincent and tells him how Sophie plotted to sue Damien. Turns out, this was not her first rodeo either.
While working in a women’s shelter, Anya had met many women who had been abused by men but who had not been treated fairly, especially because those men had authority. A few months ago, she and Sophie had shut down a college professor and criticized him. Anya wanted to use the money to help the center financially.
Damien Carnau was the heir to a wealthy and powerful family. He was used to getting whatever he wanted, and he had a series of beating-up women. Anya knew there was no way to send him to jail, but there was a way she could pay him, literally. So one night she seduces him, and when they are alone in the house, she is covering her roof.
She threatened to go to the police and believed that this would scare Damien. But soon, it became clear that she was looking down on her. Damien does not like to criticize and becomes violent. He rapes her, and in an attempt to save herself, Anya stabbed him with a knife.
Shocked Anya calls Kamal, unaware that she had killed Damien. He climbs onto the roof of the building and cares for her injuries, but when he realizes what has happened, he is terrified. He does not want any part of it as it could get him into a lot of trouble, considering that he is still an immigrant who does not have the documents that he has a family to take care of.
Anya gives him a wallet and a Damien watch, trying to get money out of the situation, and chases her away. She knows the police will believe her if they find out she has been raped. She tries to stick to the seller’s point of view, but CCTV footage from a neighboring building is undermining her program. When the police found out about Kamal, she told them to flee. She tries to blame him and washes her hands and removes everything. In the end, she succeeds.
In all four episodes, ‘The Perfect Mother’ keeps the audience guessing about Anya’s innocence. We see the case from Helene’s case, who does not want to believe that her daughter could commit such a heinous crime. We often love a mother’s love and faith for her child. Helene’s devotion to her daughter throughout the case, as Anya’s lie comes out, one by one, shows that she is ready to do whatever it takes to save her daughter.
When Vincent tells her the truth, he expects her to take it to the police and hold Anya accountable for her actions. But Helen knows it will destroy her family. She does not see Anya going to prison, especially after discovering that she too has been abused. She tells Vincent to protect him, no matter what and asks the judge to drop her charges. Vincent realizes that Helene is blinded by her love and there is no way he can change her mind. So, he did what any good lawyer would do. He gets his client to go free.
The case of Damien’s death has been laid to rest with Kamal, the deceased. This was Anya’s plan all the time, but she did not expect Kamal to die while fleeing from the police. She is also upset that he hiding the fact that he was married and has a child.
She thought they were in love, which is why she wanted to protect Kamal, even when he was forced to run away. But now, she makes no effort to save his image. Things get better for her, and she walks freely.
Although Helen does not allow the truth to come out, she cannot deny the fact that her daughter is no longer an innocent, perfect girl. There is a side to revenge, a trick to Anya that she knew nothing about. And now, she must live with the fact that her daughter is a liar and a murderer, and that she has a hand in her crime because she hid the truth from everyone.
