The Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 8: Recap
In the Gilded Age Season 1 Episode 8, Peggy is forced to revisit her tragic future after Armstrong read the book Raikes left her. She fell in love with Elias Finn, who worked as a store boy at her father’s pharmacy and was mentioned earlier in the series. They left Brooklyn to live in Philadelphia. Her father found her married and pregnant and forced Elias to sign a statement stating that he was married.
The truth about the accident in Millbourne, Pennsylvania, came about by chance. Earlier in the episode, Marian sees Mabel Ainsley, George’s stenographer, delivering some papers to Larry aimed at her father. When she visits the store, she sees Ainsley walking and finds that the other woman has left her bag. The store clerk calls her Mrs. Dickson.
Marian volunteered to bring a purse and then to visit Russell’s home. George was present at the time. Things became clear when he learned that Ainsley’s real name was Dickson. The man in charge of building the railway line is also called Dickson. In court, George’s lawyer persuaded Ms. Dickson / Ainsley to admit that George had written a note for a different purpose. Bertha suggested a company that would repair his office, but George found them too expensive.
Ainsley kept the paper, believing it to be useful in the future. This is not the first time he and Dickson have misused their savings. The court acquitted George of all charges and told Ainsley and Dickson that the matter would be referred to the prosecutor’s office. Both can go to jail. In addition, George threatened Ainsley that he would look after him and make sure he never worked in any office.
