The Dropout Season 1 Episode 5: Recap
The Dropout Season 1 Episode 5,’ opens with Elizabeth meeting Jay Rosan and Wade Miquelon to discuss the timeline of the Walgreens-Theranos partnership to be achieved. However, Elizabeth has not yet provided Walgreens with any significant details regarding the device’s progress, and Theranos failed to meet previous deadlines. Wade pressures Elizabeth to commit to the September deadline which is almost impossible to reach.
Back in Theranos, Sunny Balwani and a team of engineers are aware of the flaws in their device. Upon hearing of the September deadline for Elizabeth, Sunny is devastated and is considering leaving the company. Elsewhere, George Shultz hires renowned lawyer David Boies to fight Elizabeth’s case against Richard Fuisz. Fuisz knows that Theanos copyrights are in the names of Elizabeth and Ian Gibbons. It is clear that Elizabeth did not do any scientific work in search of patents, and Gibbons’ testimony would expose Elizabeth as a fraud.
Gibbons has been summoned to appear in court to testify in court. However, his non-disclosure agreement with Theranos binds him to destroy the truth. Feeling helpless, Gibbons attempts suicide and dies a few days later. Without Gibbons’ testimony, Fuisz is forced to drop the case but decides to expose Elizabeth as a fraud.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth is considering leaving her company after hearing that Sunny wants to leave her. Elizabeth attends her uncle’s funeral when her mother encourages her to keep fighting for her dreams. Elizabeth returns to Theanos with a renewed sense of hope. However, he made a dubious decision to keep the company from meeting its deadline again.
Elizabeth hires Brendan Morris to lead a team of rival engineers and help speed up the development of the Theranos machine. He is quick to outdo his peers and has an attractive personality. Morris formed a strong relationship with Ian Gibbons, and both are well aware that Thelosos is not in a position to fulfill the promises Elizabeth made. In the last episodes of the episode, we see Gibbons packing his things and leaving Thelosos.
