“Our Blues Season 1.” As we come to the conclusion of “Our Blues,” a long series of 20 episodes, we decide that we probably only love “pieces of life” when it doesn’t make much sense. Not to put a very strong box in it, but K dramas have always incorporated some dreamy quality into their stories that gained the fame they enjoy. Although they are not fast, they make sure that the viewer also does not give up.
From the beginning, “Our Blues” struggled with its movement, moving very slowly. While the ending ties together the stories of all the characters in the clean slots, we couldn’t help but think of how little we had. And that is a sign of a dysfunctional show. Now, know about Our Blues Season 1.
Our Blues Season 1: Recap
In the last week of “Our Blues,” we saw the culmination of three notable stories: Young Ju’s and Hyun’s; Jeong Joon and Young Ok; and finally that of Dong Seok and Ok Dong. Young Ju is giving birth to a baby girl near the end of the episode, and the new parents seem to be smiling at the end of their misery. Speaking of Jeong Joon and Young Ok, the latter is very nervous about meeting his parents.
But Jeong Joon reassures her and tells her not to worry as her parents already know about her family. Young Ok is not satisfied but decides to shoot him and take her car. She did so, thinking that if things did not work out for him, she would be able to walk easily. When they arrive at Jeong Joon’s parents’ house, Young Ok worries that they are not afraid of her and smiles.
It turns out, however, that the two of them just chose a bad day as the parents were not in a good mood for reasons unrelated to the couple. At the dinner table, Jeong Joon’s mother had tears in her eyes as she told Young Ok that it must have been very difficult for her because of her family. After this conversation, Young Ok is relaxed and begins to talk easily with them. Jeong Joon’s parents acted like Young Ok and, in appearance, gave them their blessing.
When we first saw Dong Seok’s story begin in “Our Blues” Episode 1, we thought it would be a love affair between him and Seon A, and his aggressive, incomparable personality was due to something related to that. But I commend the creators for not taking the character on a very dirty path and giving him a background that sees the difference between the trauma of the generation and what it means to overcome that.
It starts with Dong Seok and Ok Dong losing their boat and taking the car to their destination. Dong Seok tries to be polite, and he helps her with her seat belt. She asks him to bring her to Madang Ri, on the outskirts of Makpo.
After their visit to Man Su, they go to Jong U’s house, where they meet Dong Seok’s step-brother, and the tension between them is very clear. In the house, all but Dong Seok knelt down to pay their respects to their late father. Jong U and Dong Seok do not get along very well as the former used to harass and beat him in the past.
It was not long before they started fighting, and Jong U accused Dong Seok of being a thief as he fled the house after stealing all the money. The latter says it is just compensation for all the abuse he had to endure at his hands and that of his stepfather. Jong U said he felt sorry for her, at which point Ok Dong intervened and claimed that it was his actions that caused his father’s death. He began to react emotionally to the loss of her husband from the shock of losing that money.
Later that day, Dong Seok asks his mother why she never apologized for being such a quiet spectator whenever he was abused? Ok, Dong responds that there has never been a reason for him to apologize, and this obviously annoys her son.
The next day, upon arriving at Madang Ri, the site of Ok Dong, they discovered that it had been turned into a reservoir. Towards the end of the day, Dong Seok, finally satisfied, tells his mother that this is the last thing he did for her. As they walk through the woods to where their mother wants to go, she ends up twisting her ankle.
Ok, Dong reveals her difficult childhood and tells Dong Seok how she lost her entire family in such a short time. She got married and went to live with his stepfather to make sure Dong Seok ate three meals a day and had access to education. Other than that it was beyond her control, which is why she never intervened when he was abused. As she cries out in embarrassment, she asks him to give her a funeral after her death. Dong Seok has tears in his eyes as he finally begins to understand his mother’s actions.
Our Blues Season 1: Ending Explained: What Happened At The End of the Season?
After understanding his mother, Dong Seok let go of his great anger. He wraps his in a coat and gives her rides on a piggyback. Later, they go out to eat noodles, where they talk openly, on the border of love. On another trip, Ok Dong took her son to the town of Gusa, where she met his father for the first time. Dong Seok is determined to give his mother fond memories and take her to Mount Halla to take a trip.
He tells her that the death of her loved ones was not her fault and asks her about her happy memories. Ok Dong responds by saying that she was very happy at the time. That trip was a healing trip for both mother and son. With injuries behind them, Dong Seok takes her to the house he was preparing for Seon A, where she now lives with her son Yeol. In the house, Ok Dong tells Seon A that Dong Seok has a kind heart and blesses them.
When she returns home, she prepares soup for her son and asks him to come. But when Dong Seok arrives, he finds his mother dead. He simply admits that he never really hated her. All he wanted was to be her son again. A good time for the hardships of human emotions and the pull in our hearts when we see how a little honesty and risk can save us all these years of resentment. Maybe we can find the closure to the saying ‘everything goes well in the end.
A month later, the people of Jeju Island come together for an athletic event. Young Ok encourages Seon A to get involved. It concludes with a beautiful montage of runners, each representing the teams of their relationship tour. In a tear-jerking episode, the ending of “Our Blues” touched our hearts and made us forgive many of the frustrations we have had over the past ten weeks with these characters.
