‘Who Killed Sarah’ is an old murder mystery in which Netflix’s signature is posted. The Mexican series follows Alex in his quest to avenge the powerful Lazcano family over the death of his sister. And not only that, after being misjudged for his murder and being deceived by the Lazcanos, Alex has spent 18 years in prison.

Seeking revenge, Alex attacks the family only to see that his accusations were false and that he did not know which family member was responsible for his sister’s death. A mysterious murder mystery or a sad story of real-life unjust justice? Where is it? If you are wondering if ‘Who Killed Sarah’ is based on a true story or not, we have some answers we can do for you.

Is Who Killed Sara A Real Story?

No, ‘Who Killed Sarah’ is not based on a real story. Originally titled ‘Quién Mató a Sara ?,’ the series was created by the famous Chilean writer Jose Ignacio Valenzuela, whose work has spanned more than 30 years writing films and TV shows as well as books for children and adults. Hailing from a family of writers and living in Chile, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe, and the US, Valenzuela has written more than 20 telenovelas, including the award-winning ‘Santa Diabla’.

Valenzuela is open about her habit of incorporating information into his life. In an interview with ADN Radio about his famous writing career, ‘El Filo de Tu Piel,’ produced by the series Sony Pictures Television, the creator recalled when he started his writing career in 2002 and said, “I. went to my aunt Ana María Güiraldes (a well-known children’s book writer) and told me to ‘lend the main character your past life and your circumstances, and it will not go out of hand because you are writing about someone you know.’

The protagonist of ‘El Filo de Tu Piel’ is a gay drama writer, after leaving the room, he moves to New York and begins a sad new life with the man he met there. There are many similarities with Valenzuela’s life here. We see this clearly in the character ‘Who Killed Sarah’ – Jose Maria (Eugenio Siller), ’Valenzuela openly supported him. In the show, Jose and his partner, a same-sex couple, are struggling to find friends as they try to have a baby and face the humiliation of Jose’s gay father.

In real life, Valenzuela is also a homosexual and has an adopted daughter. He is a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA + rights and often talks about the inequalities she experiences as a result of his gender preferences. We see Jose expressing a very similar outrage at his parents’ mental illness.

Another influence on Valenzuela was that of Augusto Pinochet, a Chilean dictator from 1973 to 1990, under Valenzuela’s rule who spent his childhood and early youth. The military attitude of the Lazcano family head is probably from Pinochet, something Valenzuela did in the past.

Aside from the characters, the plot ‘Who Killed Sarah’ itself draws inspiration from the creator’s childhood. Valenzuela is best known for his family dramas and mysterious sites. In an interview with The Impartial (Oaxaca), the author stated that he was a huge fan of Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle when he was growing up. Interestingly, the conspiracy ‘Who Killed Sarah,’ at its core, is a classic whodunnit – a style most famous by Agatha Christie.

In many of Agatha Christie’s novels, a murder takes place, followed by a list of suspects who may be part of one family or group of strangers, and each has his or her own reason for committing a crime. Most of the time it is the killer who is a little suspicious.

Despite starting out as revenge, ‘Who Killed Sarah’ soon became a murderous mystery with the main character Alex and the audience trying to figure out who killed him. The vague track record of storytelling is also the beginning of the first episode, which opens with a quote from Agatha Christie.

Therefore, ‘Who Killed Sarah’ is a fictional work based on real-life experiences from the creator’s life and inspired by the books he read as a child. Valenzuela, the first Chilean writer to write for Netflix, is assisted by Rosario Valenzuela and Jean Pierre Fica in the writing process but is gaining fame as a program designer.
