Is Mumbai Diaries 26/11 a Real Story?

Mumbai Diaries 26/11’ is partly based on a real story. According to its founder Nikkhil Advani, the show is a retelling story of a terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26/11 from the point of view of medical personnel who find themselves in the throes of this catastrophe. The exhibition was originally thought of as a medical drama series (called ‘Bombay Hospital’) which focused on leading medical staff who were part of a busy hospital.

Already a big task that requires unselfish dedication even on ordinary days, Advani then became fascinated with the idea of exploring what the medical staff went through on an unusual day when terrorists attacked the city. This is where the concept of ‘Mumbai Diaries 26/11’ came from.

The show is a series of unnamed heroes in the medical community, and the main characters are fictional medical staff working at Bombay General Hospital. However, the real events that make up the spectacular history of the show are also tied to the narrative, making the challenges that doctors face are particularly sensitive. For one thing, Bombay General Hospital does not exist but appears to have been freely occupied at Mumbai’s Cama & Albless Hospital, which the terrorists intended during the 26/11 attacks.

Albless and Cama Hospital was attacked by two terrorists, who reportedly opened fire from a hospital shelf by Mumbai police. Although two hospital guards were killed, doctors, nurses, and paramedics avoided the catastrophic consequences by locking all the ward doors, turning off the lights, and transporting many patients.

A night nurse, Anjali Kulthe, helped save the lives of up to 20 pregnant women by closing the antenatal ward and transporting patients at the end of the phase. There was also child trafficking carried out quietly during the attack. In the show, the incredible complexity of the real-life hospital and the heroic people behind it strongly encourage characters and events in BGH, which is equally besieged by terrorists.

Likewise, the Palace Hotel in this exhibition, which is attacked by terrorists, is an invention that inspired the Taj Mahal Hotel and possibly the Oberoi-Trident Hotel, which was brutally attacked during the disaster. The production of the exhibition also used many of the realities identified by terrorists, including the Gateway of India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), and the Leopold Café.

Thus, the heavy use of real-life inspiration in the show gives it a solid place in the great events that have taken place and adds depth to the fictional stories of the middle characters. The three doctors trained in the game, who find themselves in the middle of an unprecedented situation on their first day at BGH, also seem to be a myth as there are no stories of those new doctors published.

Numerous studies have reportedly made BGH feel true, including all the “hospital staff” of the infamous hospital who are studying hard to handle medical equipment, using medical jargon in a way that sounds natural, and knowledge of basic medical procedures such as sewing and sewing.

Advani’s aim was to make the audience feel like they were in the emergency room with the characters, and therefore, he focused on restoring in detail the real hospital environment. A number of internal problems, such as the lack of medical equipment and ICU beds, which are often faced by real hospitals (especially during a disaster), have also been included in the exhibition narrative.

In short, ‘Mumbai Diaries 26/11’ is a real example of fictional history, which takes strong inspiration from the brutal terrorist attacks and uses them to inform the characters and the circumstances of their narratives. Although the stories of the main characters are legendary, their spirit is based on the real heroes of medical practice who continue to devote themselves to caring for their patients even in the most trying circumstances.
