Gangubai Kathiawad is a historical crime drama based on the life of a real sex worker mentioned in the book Mafia Queens of S. Hussain More. The film is about Ganga (Alia Bhatt), a young girl who was sexually abused by her fiancé. As the plot intensifies, she becomes a prominent figure in the underworld.
Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt will be seen stepping into the shoes of brothel owner Gangubai Kathiawadi in the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Gangubai first wanted to be an actor in Bollywood films. At the age of 16, she fell in love with her father’s accountant and ran away with him. They arrived in Mumbai and settled there. When she dreamed of starting a new life with her lover, she betrayed him. Gangubai’s husband sold her for Rs 500 instead of prostitutes.
According to a letter from S Hussain Zaidi, Gangubai had extensive contact with criminals in the world. Gangubai was reportedly raped by a member of Karim Lala’s party. In his quest for justice, he turned to Karim Lala and pleaded with him. Meanwhile, he tied the racket to Karim Lala and made him his brother again. Shortly afterward, Karim Lala gave the Kamathipura local order to his sister Rakhi Gangubai and she became one of the ‘Mafia Queens.’ However, Gangubai did not keep the girl in the brothel without her consent.
She also dedicated her life to improving sex work and orphanages. She even led an organization against the simultaneous removal of the prostitute market from Mumbai. Even today, a statue of Gangubai is erected in Kamathipura, Mumbai.
